This mural inside Paete Church is a picture of the various levels of heaven, purgatory and hell. The details of this mural are very intriguing and disturbing. It’s very strange. I believe this painting is entitled Purgatorio (Purgatory), by Josef Luciano Dans (1805- ca. 1870), which shows the eight forms of punishment the soul passes through for cleansing before reaching Heaven. There is more information here.

When we were children we used to come to this chapel every afternoon for the Flores de Mayo. Hopefully, the people of Kalasuyan will improve the chapel as it needs some attention.

The execution in 1892 of the three Filipino priests in Manila is marked by this distinct memorial in Rizal Park or Luneta Park. As it was taught at school the three religious fathers are also known as GOMBURZA.

This is San Sebastian Cathedral of Bacolod City. I was walking along the street in the city with my friends from Japan when I spotted this building with a lot of history. When it comes to age I think it has a beautiful character as it is very old. It is one of the main tourist attractions of Negros Occidental, Philippines. I had a great time speaking Ilonggo and it was fun.

Looking at this view of the public cemetery in Binoligan, Kidapawan shows that is it filling up quite quickly, although this picture doesn’t show the whole area that is occupied.

You can see here that most families built their own canopies that look like small huts, which does not look amazing but at some point the graves will probably be painted and quite often the graves are surrounded with plants to make it look nicer. It is common for Filipinos to visit their love ones’ graves several times a year so having those shelters keeps them cool under the heat of the sun.

Two Lovers

This is one of the many flowers we offer to the Virgin Mary at the altar every evening during Flores de Mayo in the month of May. Young children gather together happily in a single line with fresh flowers in their hands just outside the chapel getting ready for the procession. When everything is ready we start to sing praises to the Lord and the Virgin Mary, all the way to the altar.

I still don’t know why they call this flower from Indangan (a barangay of Kidapawan), Two Lovers but I think it is beautiful.

This is the new public cemetery in Binoligan, a barangay of Kidapawan. I think that some people are aware that the old public cemetery in Kidapawan was running out of space so there is a new cemetery out in the Binoligan countryside.

Previous Bishops of Kidapawan

Bishop Federico O. Escaler S.J. D.D was elected as the first bishop of the Diocese of Kidapawan Google MapsGoogle EarthMultimap.comMSN Virtual Earth in 1976.

Four years later, in 1980, the second bishop arrived to take over from Bishop Escaler, who left to be the bishop of Ipil, Zamboanga del Sur Google MapsGoogle EarthMultimap.comMSN Virtual Earth, where he stayed for quite a long time. http://www.cbcponline.net/kidapawan/

The second Bishop, Orlando B. Quevedo OMI, DD, was elected in October 1980 and he was ordained at the same cathedral in the Diocese of Kidapawan where the first bishop was ordained. It was also during his time that the Guadalupe Pastoral Centre in Balindog was constructed. As far as I know it was also during his time when bishop’s scholars started in Kidapawan.
